The McGhees

HANOVER COUNTY, VA

Two eastern easements. One family legacy.

Charles and Cathy McGhee were motivated by the connections between the past, present, and future of their family to protect their Hanover County farmland with a second conservation easement in 2023. The first property that Chuck placed into easement was handed down to him by his grandparents, and he purchased the second property later on to expand farm operations. Recognizing the rich agricultural and historic conservation values of the lands, the McGhees knew that their properties were worth protecting for the future generations that they will eventually pass the properties down to.

The easement on the properties protects history beyond that of the McGhee family. Both the Civil War Battle of Hanover Court House and the Battle of Totopotomoy Creek were fought on one of the properties in 1864. The second conservation easement also protects 56 acres of Prime Farmland Soils, 33 acres of Very High ecological integrity, and 12 acres of associated wetlands. It was an honor to work with the McGhees to protect their land and their legacy.
